Abraham Nelson

Abraham Nelson is the Executive head of the Consumer Goods Crime Risk Initiative (CGCRI)at the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA). He is a long serving member of the South African Police Service where he worked for a period of 30 years until 2016. He held the rank of Brigadier at Crime Intelligence Head Office and was the Section Head: Multi- Dimensional Organised Crime. During his tenure at SAPS, he managed and participated in National and trans- national investigations and operations in collaboration with relevant local and foreign law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The core of the investigations and operations were focused on organized crime. As the Section Head he also travelled abroad extensively representing the SAPS on various Interpol forums. His current role at the CGCSA is based on pro-actively preventing the occurrence of crime threats within the industry. This is achieved by doing the following: Crime incident Information management and analysis, Lobbying and facilitating cooperation with law enforcement and all other relevant stakeholders, Cross industry engagements and the developments of SOPs and sharing of best practices for the entire retail value chain.

Advocate Anton du Plessis

Advocate Anton du Plessis is CEO of Business Against Crime South Africa and a globally recognised criminal justice and prosecutorial reform leader. A former Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, he has held senior executive roles in South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority, the United Nations, and the Institute for Security Studies. His international roles include serving as Legal and Criminal Justice Coordinator at the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate in New York, and as a Criminal Justice Expert with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Vienna. He also served as Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies, Africa’s leading human security policy institute, where he led strategy, partnerships, fundraising and continental policy engagement. With more than 25 years’ experience across government, multilateral institutions and civil society, Anton has worked in over 20 African countries on complex crime, counter-terrorism, organised crime, prosecutorial reform and security-sector transformation. He has advised governments, Attorneys General, UN bodies and international organisations, and has contributed to major policy, legal and institutional reforms across Africa and globally. Anton is an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa, holds three law degrees, and has completed executive leadership programmes at Harvard and Oxford. He is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, a member of the WEF Global Future Council on Governance, and co-author of the Oxford University Press Counter-Terrorism Law Handbook.

Alistair Philander

Angela Russell

Angela Russell began her career as a registered nurse before moving into the commercial sector, where she held various senior leadership roles across the FMCG and medical-device industries. Angela is currently the CEO of the Drinks Federation of South Africa, where combating the illicit and counterfeit alcohol trade is a key organisational priority. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Management.

Charles Lowings

Charles Lowings is the Senior Retail Operations Manager: Risk for SPAR South Rand Division, with over 22 years of experience at SPAR and more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement, retail operations, investigations, and risk management. He oversees risk management across SPAR retail stores and the South Rand Distribution Centre, with responsibility for retail crime prevention, loss prevention, fraud investigations, occupational health and safety, and business continuity. A former member of the South African Police Service K9 Unit, Charles represents SPAR on the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA) and serves on the Consumer Goods Crime Initiative (CGCI), where he works with retailers, law enforcement, and industry partners to develop collaborative strategies to combat organised retail crime. He is a regular presenter on retail crime prevention, shrinkage reduction, and risk management, sharing practical insights gained from decades of operational experience

Dr Mark Nasila

Dr Mark Nasila is a luminary in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science and the Chief Data and Analytics Officer for FNB AI Strategy. He also shares his expertise at the Singularity Group, specialising in AI, data science and data strategies. He is a leading member of the National Institute for Theoretical Physics and Computational Sciences (NITheCS), a research fellow at Stellenbosch University, and a Professor of Practice in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Johannesburg. His innovative approach at FNB has revolutionised risk management and forensic due diligence through advanced AI systems, setting new benchmarks in banking technology. He is a renowned speaker, gracing stages at the likes of the SingularityU South Africa Summit, sharing his insights into the future of AI and big data. He is also board member of Moody’s Analytics Europe and Africa advisory board, where he shares his insights with a broader audience and has established himself as an expert in his field. Dr Nasila is the author of the best-selling book – African Artificial Intelligence, and the recently released book - Mastering Sovereign Artificial Intelligence Dr. Nasila's work exemplifies the transformative power of emerging technology in finance and beyond, making him a distinguished figure in the global tech landscape. He was recognized as 2025 Africa's most influential person in AI and data by DataIQ and Accenture.

I have been with PepsiCo since November 2020, before which I worked at Unilever for 5 years and Private Security Companies in SA and in 10 Africa Countries. • Prior to that, 14 years in the SANDF. • I am based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Farrel Frank

Farrel Frank is an Intellectual Property Attorney and Anti-Counterfeiting Specialist with more than 16 years of experience in intellectual property law, brand protection and in-market enforcement. Prior to his current role, he spent 13 years in private practice at South Africa's leading intellectual property law firms, advising both local and multinational rights holders on trademark protection, anti-counterfeiting strategies and enforcement. Recognised as a leader in brand protection and enforcement, Farrel has planned, coordinated and led thousands of successful anti-counterfeiting operations across South Africa and the region. He has worked hand in hand with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and industry stakeholders to combat counterfeit and illicit trade across a broad range of sectors, including luxury goods, sporting apparel and equipment, automotive, FMCG, alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, toys and games. Farrel currently serves as the Managing Director of the S.A. Toy and Games Association (SATAGA), a non-profit industry association dedicated to supporting the legitimate toys and games sector. Under his leadership, SATAGA has strengthened industry collaboration to address the growing threat of counterfeit and illicit goods, working closely with the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA), Government Agencies and other Industry Associations to promote consumer safety, protect and enforce intellectual property rights and support lawful trade.

Graham Wright

Graham Wright is the Chief Executive of Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA), a business-driven non-profit organization committed to fostering a safe, secure, and conducive environment for business in South Africa. BACSA focuses on enhancing collaboration and anti-crime measures across the business sector and strengthening collaboration law enforcement agencies and government. In addition, he serves as the Executive Lead for the Crime & Corruption Focal Area within the government-business partnership established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2023. This initiative mobilizes business expertise and resources to support government-led crime-fighting and anti-corruption efforts, with BACSA acting as the primary interface between the public and private sectors on these critical issues. Through BACSA and the broader Crime & Corruption Workstream (CCWS), Graham plays a key role in leveraging business capabilities to bolster government interventions while enhancing business preparedness and response strategies. These initiatives are designed to strengthen public-private collaboration across policy, strategic, and operational levels. Graham has provided consulting services to various organizations, spearheaded multiple technology-based start-ups, and served on the boards of several companies. His expertise in innovation and strategic leadership continues to drive impactful change in South Africa’s fight against crime and corruption.

Johnny Moloto

Roles: Head of Corporate & Regulatory Affairs, Sub-Saharan Africa, BAT Board member, SA Tobacco Transformation Alliance (SATTA) Johnny Moloto is Area Head of Corporate & Regulatory Affairs (CORA) at BAT Sub-Saharan Africa, the largest legal tobacco manufacturer in South Africa. Moloto joined BAT in 2018, leading the external affairs team in South Africa, before being promoted to General Manager of South Africa in early 2021. He was appointed Head of Corporate & Regulatory Affairs for BAT’s Sub-Saharan African operations in late 2023, and currently serves on the board of the South Africa Tobacco Transformation Association (SATTA), an industry association spanning the full tobacco value chain. Moloto’s career spans several decades across government and corporate relations. He served as a deputy director for strategy, research and co-ordination in the South African Presidency and later joined the Department of International Relations & Co-operation (Dirco). Here, he led political and economic co-operation efforts in China and the US, before joining the diplomatic corps, and ultimately served as South Africa’s deputy ambassador to the US. Moloto is passionate about fostering meaningful relationships between governments, civil society and the private sector. He views these collaborative efforts as the cornerstone to addressing regulatory challenges, creating a level playing field and overcoming obstacles to South Africa’s economic prosperity. He is also a strong believer in tobacco harm reduction, believing it to be a novel, realistic way to look at tobacco control globally.

Major General Maqashalala

Major General A.B. Maqashalala was appointed as the Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection for the Western Cape on 1 January 2022. The office of the Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection is responsible for investigations conducted at all Police Stations (152), including specialised investigative units in the Western Cape. He has 40 years unbroken service within the SAPS, of which 34 years are in the field of investigation. He has been a manager and investigator in the following Units: Murder & Robbery Serious & Violent Crimes Crime Intelligence Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) He has also held the following Senior Command Positions: Detective Commander – SAPS Beacon Bay, Eastern Cape Provincial Commander – Crime Intelligence, Eastern Cape Provincial Commander – Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, Kwa Zulu Natal Provincial Commander – Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, Eastern Cape He holds the following tertiary qualifications: B-Tech – Public Management, UNISA Forensic Investigation, Auditing, UNISA Executive Management Development, North West University.

Matlou Setati

Matlou Setati is the Executive for the Food Safety & Sustainability Initiative (FSSI), a division of the CGCSA. The FSSI is responsible for advocacy and liaison of sustainable initiatives, forums, projects and/or programmes within the precincts of food science, safety, quality, nutrition, health & wellness, sustainability, regulatory and related matters for the consumer goods and retail industries. Matlou has over 20 years of experience in the South African food and agricultural industry, which includes various food production companies, and ten (years of service in public office at the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, where she served as Chief Agricultural Food and Quarantine Technician (Food Quality Inspector) and Chief Food Safety & Quality Assurance Officer (Food Regulations).

Michele Francis Padayachee

Michele Francis Padayachee is Global Standards and Solutions Executive at GS1 South Africa, where she leads initiatives advancing digital transformation, interoperable supply chains, and trusted product data across Africa. With over 28 years’ experience spanning technology, business integration, and supply chain transformation, she is recognised for driving standards-based solutions that improve traceability, enable regulatory compliance, and support safe trade. Michele also serves as Chairperson of the SABS Board Advisory Forum and is a strong advocate for standards harmonisation, digital innovation, and resilient supply chains.

Neo Momodu (MC)

Neo is a distinguished Government Affairs, Public Policy, and Strategic Communications Specialist with over 25 years of leadership experience across South Africa’s most regulated and influential sectors—including FMCG, Information Technology, Broadcasting, Print Media, Healthcare, and Government. As Programme Director, Neo brings a legacy of policy influence and public trust-building. She has also championed industry-wide advocacy as a senior leader within an FMCG association representing 9,000 member companies—developing public policy strategies that safeguard the sustainability and viability of the sector. Nuno Pires

Nuno Pires is a seasoned executive in health, safety, security and risk management, with significant leadership experience in the retail sector. As the Head of Health, Safety & Security at Pick n Pay, he directs strategies to safeguard the company's people, customers, assets, and operations across the retail network. His background includes operational leadership, crisis management, and corporate governance, where he has successfully managed security operations, business continuity planning, and fraud investigations. Nuno oversees areas such as occupational health and safety, corporate security, and incident management, collaborating with law enforcement and government bodies. Recognized for his leadership-driven approach, Nuno has spoken at national and international forums, sharing insights on crisis leadership and organizational resilience. He advocates for integrating safety and business strategy, believing effective leadership is essential for protecting people and enhancing business performance. Nuno is also passionate about leadership development and creating high-performing teams focused on safety and responsible business operations.

Sikhulekile (Khule) Duma

Khule is the Portfolio Lead for Partnerships and Programmes in the Private Office of the President, The Republic of South Africa. He is responsible for driving digital transformation of the public sector through Operation Vulindlela. Khule also leads coordination in the Government and Business partnership across the energy, logistics, and crime and corruption focal areas.

Tanya van Meelis

Tanya van Meelis is Head of COSATU's Policy Unit. She has extensive experience working in labour as well as a senior government official in the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition. She has post graduate qualifications in both Industrial Sociology from Wits University and Economics from the University of London.

Vershen Naidoo

Vershen Naidoo is a senior risk and security professional with close to sixteen years of experience across supply chain, logistics, HSSEQ, corporate security, and business continuity. He serves as Head of Risk and Security for the Supply Chain Division at takealot.com, having held senior leadership appointments at takealot.com, Imperial, and Barloworld Logistics. Zinhle Tyikwe

Zinhle Tyikwe is the Chief Executive Officer of GS1 South Africa, where she leads with strategic clarity, institutional integrity, and a deep commitment to inclusive advancement. Her career spans more than two decades in human resources and executive management, marked by a consistent focus on unlocking potential, driving transformation, and elevating women within the consumer goods sector and beyond. Since joining GS1 South Africa in 2013, Zinhle has played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s culture and strategic direction—first as Executive for Human Resources and Communications, and now as its CEO. Her leadership is grounded in academic excellence, holding two honours degrees in Human Resources Development and Industrial Psychology & Organisational Development from UNISA, and an MBA from the University of South Wales. Zinhle’s influence has extended across sectors through her previous board roles with the Wholesale and Retail SETA and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, where she contributed to national skills development and healthcare governance. She continues to lend her voice to strategic transformation as a member of the SAB Sharp Advisory Board, helping guide responsible industry practices and community impact. As we honour the theme Empowering Women, Empowering the Future in this year’s Women Colloquy, Zinhle embodies the principle that empowered women are architects of progress. Her leadership is not only institutional—it is generational.
